Brad Sprinkle's Trash Flies

FlyfishMagazine's friend Brad Sprinkle is famous for re purposing found and abandoned items for fly tying. His website, www.TrashFlies.com has lots of tips for the angler who wants to keep our landfills a bit less crowded while saving a buck or two. Brad also wrote an excellent article for us on the subject. Note the bugger above with a cone head made from a hollow point .177 caliber pellet.

Jonny Bones Tackle

We ran into this pirate at The Fly Fishing Show and picked up a sweet deal on some Mustad hooks. Jonny Bone's logo and tag line that reads "Catch it. Kill it. Eat it." caught our eye almost as much as the prices. His website isn't Ecommerce active but you can contact him via email to make a purchase.

Cupidfish.com

We all know him. That angler who doesn't know the joys of matrimony. Most likely he just got back from a jaunt to Mongolia to fish for those giant fish that eat small dogs for snacks. He probably works three months of the year and then spends the rest of his time roaming the country side fishing while you and I are mowing the grass and taking out the garbage.

Do your pal a favor. Point him to Cupidfish.com so that he can find a mate and get properly hitched up like the rest of us. Tell him he owes it to his married buddies.

Makers: Ed Engelman's $6 Fly Tying Vise

Ed Engelman of the aptly named EdEngelman.com is all about fishing and fly tying on the cheap. He provides his own version of an economy buster and proves that you can tie flies without one of those fancy rotary thingamabobs, the $6 fly tying vise.

This fly tying vise can be built and used as a low cost way to introduce tying flies and jigs. It is designed to be built by those who may not be willing to commit the financial resources to purchase more expensive equipment. I have introduced adults and children to tying flies on these vises. The flies can then be fished on a fly rod or can be used with a spinning outfit when a casting bubble is used. When children catch a fish on a fly or jig of their own creation, it is almost as though they are catching their first fish again! And of course, the participants experience the connection between insect, fish and themselves.

Check out Ed's site for more great ideas for home craft fishing gear. Oh and if you simply must have a rotary vise to tie, check out his Fly Tying Vise with Osterizer Blender Base. It must be for the production tyer with really fast hands.

Editor's note: Seriously, this guy's ideas are great! Be sure to check out his site. I found him via one of the blogs in our sidebar but for the life of me I can't figure out which one it was to give props.

FlyFishMagazine.com: Old Guys Love Us

flyfishmagazine.com The site appeals to a mostly male, 50+, HH income up to $60k audience.

Via Quantcast - Well we never really tried to be "This is Fly."

We do have some exciting things in the works for the near future,if all goes according to plan. Plans include a radical site redesign (no page flipping software though) that combines the blog with the e-zine domain, the addition of a "Editor of Coarse Fishing" (read carp), installing a fly fishing artist in virtual residence, and articles about fly fishing the world from one of the biggest fly fishing outfitters in the UK.

I am also looking to expand our regional coverage so if you are interested in writing articles or blog posts about your "neck of the woods" drop me a note and lets talk. We don't pay but If you are a fly fishing guide or have something to sell we will give you lots of free advertising and as you can see old guys with a reasonable amount of money love us.

Meanwhile, next week we will be prowling the floor of the Fly Fishing Retailer Show in Denver looking for paparazzi photos of fly fishing industry types in compromising situations to exploit for free gear new and exciting products of which we will surreptitiously snap photos and upload to this site via our super secret James Bond like spy camera / Crackberry. Thus giving our readers the scoop on goings on

Old Fishing Stuff

I ran across this site today and wanted to share it with the fly fishing masses. OldFishingStuff.com was created in 1999 by Phil White of Nampa, Idaho as a way to share his passion for collecting fishing tackle. The site includes news stories, articles and a monthly eBay Report that follows the pricing of collectible gear through the marketplace.
Old Fishing Stuff went on line in May of 1999. At the time there was a decided lack of on line information available for fishing tackle collectors. My vision was for a magazine type web site that provided information, not a site full of my collection, or a message board. I believe we have succeeded.

OFS is not a profit making site. It exists because of my love of fishing and collecting old fishing stuff. I hope this comes through. I have been collecting old tackle since the 1970s, and have written seven books on old fishing stuff. I am the past editor of The Reel News, the magazine of the Old Reel Collectors Association, and have also contributed many articles to the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club.
