Recently I ran into to an old high school buddy on facebook. His day job is renting boats and PWC to the turistas in Key West, Florida. While surfing some of his photos I soon discovered that he was leading a double life as the Admrial of the Church of Snipentology.

With temperatures in the teens pretty much everywhere outside of the Conch Republic, you should check out the photos just to get a warm feeling. We especially enjoy the official tee shirt as well as the wisdom through out the congregation's site.

Thursday "Wild Ass" Photo and Rant

I don't know about you but I am so over all of this election talk that wild asses couldn't get me to post anything even remotely related to it. North Carolina has been overrun of late with the trophy wife having to dodge motorcades to get to work yesterday morning.

As an aside, I seem to vaguely remember some talk in journalism school (yes, believe it or not, I am somewhat semi-professionally trained and no my Alma Mater has not yet revoked my sheepskin) about impartial reporting of the news. I am guessing that all that got cut from the budget.

For your information the above "Wild Ass" photo was taken in close proximity to Colorado's Dream Stream near the town of Fairplay. I post it because I just got a phone message from our pal "The Sultan of large Western Rainbow Trout" informing me that while I am chained to my desk here in Carolina, the bite at Spinney Mountain Reservoir is on and he will be sending mondo photos of the large trout the tells me are in that lake. Don't feel bad for me though, with some luck and the help of another good friend, this weekend may find me chasing sea run trout of another sort.

In other "Wild Ass" news this week:

Nestle got a bit of a rocky reception when they sent their shills to meet with the good people of the McCloud community to get comments about their proposed bottled water plant. Ridicule ensues while we play "Where's Tom Chandler" with the meeting photos at MtShastaNews.com.

The Sportsman's Alliance for Alaska (a group fighting the Pebble Mine) is drafting a letter to the Bureau of Land Management asking them to not release their record of decision on protections for the Bristol Bay Area until they have heard from groups with concerns about it. Email Scott Hed for more information and to sign the letter to the BLM.

Finally our retirement just got more promising as FlyfishMagazine.com's Editorial offspring lost his amature status as an actor by being paid as an extra in the filming of "The 5th Quarter" starring Andie McDowell. We are not sure but we believe him to be "concerned guy #12" with a close up during the hospital scene. PS. you know your kid is growing up when the waiter asks if you want him to split the check at dinner.

Fish Porn for the Common Man

Could a renewed interest in the sport of fly fishing be fueled by the digital camera? Without affordable digital cameras, many fishing photos might be relegated to an undeveloped roll of 35mm film in some anglers camera bag. What's better than spending the first few minutes of your Monday sending photos of your Saturday catch to all your buddies?

According to this article in the Worcester Telegram Barry and Cathy Beck say the digital camera has had a bigger effect on the sport than most people think.

Photos in the industry’s leading magazines and most recent books often upstage even compelling text; they show the sport’s excitement and adventure in a way that was not possible before digital photography. “Digital has really turned people back to photography; it’s instantly gratifying,” said Barry Beck, who had just finishing giving a standing-room-only seminar on the subject Friday at the annual fly fishing show in Marlboro.

“You take a picture of a fish you’ve caught on a stream
you’re on, and you can see it right away, and you can instantly share it with
your friends,” Beck noted.

“Look what the Internet has done for our industry (fly
fishing); you can Google anything: you can find water temperatures, water
releases and what flies are hatching on any river in any state in a second.”

I am trying to find a pic of our grandfather J B Stewart who caught the largest fish ever caught in Mills River NC several years ago. There was a pic and write up in newspapers at that tine but we do not have the date or even the year.

Would like to locate copy of pic and purchase copies for the grandchildren at Christmas. They have heard the stories for years and it would be great for them to see
