FlyfishMagazine.com fishing report contributors, Rod and Matt Champion of Champion Outfitters received a nice write up in Bristol Herald Courier. Their shop is located less than a mile from Tennessee's South Holston River.

Before we moved to this location, we ran a little fly shop in North Carolina. We then guided from a little log cabin right across the bridge from the weir dam," Rod Champion said. "Fishermen were out there at all hours of the day, so we decided that we needed a fly shop on the river. We searched for a location, found this building and took the plunge."
The 18 miles of bountiful trout river in Northeast Tennessee attracts fishing enthusiasts from across the globe. The client list for the Champions and other guide services in the Mountain Empire is wide.

"We’ve been guiding in this area for nearly five years, and we’ve had a great time meeting working with all the different folks," Rod Champion said. "Fly fishermen are diverse group. There is no average age or typical profile. The sport is for everyone."
The guiding business is competitive and time-consuming. However, Rod Champion said their work is all about family-style fun.

"It’s a unique privilege and pleasure to work with my son on a daily basis," Rod Champion said. "Matt is just a natural at guiding."

New South Holston Fishing Report

Rod and Matt from Champion Outfitters & South Holston River Fly Shop sent us a fishing report about their home waters. As is often the case on Tennessee tail water, the sulphurs are hatching!

The South Holston River is fishing extremely good right now. The Sulphurs are pouring off on low water and on high water. There are some really nice fish rising to the Duns. The trout that we are catching right now are gorged on the Sulphurs, and are mean. Then late in the Evening the Spinners are coming back to the water and there are huge Spinners fall with lots of fish rising in the evenings.

Special Prime Time Float $225

The trip is just to fish the Sulphur hatch on High water. It is a half day float in the afternoon that last about 4-5 hours. This a time to fish to big trout rising to dry flies along with thousands of 8-14" Browns and Rainbows that are rising. Starting time depends on generation schedule.
