Here are a few headlines that caught our jaded editorial eye this week:
Here's the reason we will be wearing long britches and snake gaiters the next time we mow our New Jersey lawn - An Alloway Township, NJ couple have discovered a new species of foot long leech - in their front yard. How high does the grass have to get for that? We immediately purchased some size 0 xxxxx long shanked hooks for use in the lake behind the FlyfishMagazine Corporate Compound.
A Charlotte woman has been accused of smuggling two live Asian bonytongue fish into the USA by attempting to hide them in bottles of, you guessed it, fish sauce. In what might be the best excuse ever, she offered that they were a surprise gift from her Mother who hid them in the fish sauce so that she wouldn't find them until she got home. It had absolutely nothing to do with her two brother's owning a pet store and the fish being worth $1,000 each...
From the "Why hasn't someone come up with one of these for fly fishing department?" Activision is releasing We Fish, the first fishing game designed for the Wii game system.
4 player split-screen and multiplayer modes, players can choose from five hilarious characters or play as their favorite Mii. Players travel to eight locations around the world and compete in 24 tournament events. Rapala: We Fish is packaged with the Rapala fishing rod and reel peripheral, letting players cast it, crank it and set the hook.
Folks in three Long Island, NY towns are taking steps to block saltwater fishing license fees that were slated to take effect. Via Newsday.com:
Each town argued in State Supreme Court in Riverhead that the state cannot impose a saltwater license requirement - which was to take effect today - because, under the original Colonial patents that created those towns, the authority to regulate marine resources was given exclusively to the town trustees.
Aquacalypse now: Is commercial fishing having the same effect on the oceans as Bernie Madoff on rich people?
**Update** Speaking of Madoff, this can't bode well for Able Reels. Madoff’s Brother, Sons, Niece Sued for $199 Million

Four Friday Rhetorical Questions

Based on the current economy should FlyfishMagazine.com change our feature "People with jobs that don't suck" to simply "People with Jobs?"
Does twittering my blog posts to my facebook status line make me overly social?
Does moving from the South to the Northeast make me a reverse carpetbagger or just a guy who needs to tie more striper flies?
Does anyone remember when Blackberries were hell on a pair of waders or used in pies, not in airports or meeting rooms?
Feel free to add your own via the comment feature.

Three is the number thou shalt count...
Not exactly fishing related but they do mention carp, and sloths, and breakfast cereal

Friday (I'm stuck in meetings all day) Links
It is Friday and for the past three days I have been taking part in meetings that start at 7:30 AM and end around 10:00 PM. Sure there is lots of hob knobbing, food and beverage but one can't help but feel a longing to be standing knee deep in the fluff mud of a nice salt marsh. Since time is tight we thought we might keep you abreast of what the real fly fishers of the net are up to:
Our pals over at Reel Pure's Moldy Chum blog are posting about the best RV ever, the Save our Salmon 25 foot long salmon sculpture. It makes us wish our pal Paisley had taken our design advice for his teardrop camper project.
Our kilted blogger pal Alistair from The Urban Fly Fisher in the UK lets us know that so far Scotland has avoided the flooding that has plagued England of late. We are glad he is keeping dry.
Pete McDonald of Boating Magazine and The Fishing Jones blog takes time out from trying out exotic new boats to remind us why a kayak is not always the best choice of watercraft for waters inhabited by great white shark.
Hawgdaddy from The Tennessee Valley Angler has taken up his quill and crafted an excellent short story with the title "Backyard Wilderness." Here is how he describes it:
"This one is written in true Southern English where “they” and “there” are interchangeable in actual conversation, although any Southerner ("who can read - the majority of us) could tell you the difference in the written words."
Finally, if you have noticed a "disturbance in the force" lately in the fly fishing blogger community, it is probably because Tom Chandler of the massively popular Trout Underground is on vacation and has taken to posting about his gastronomic prowess.
