Smallmouth bass could be in serious trouble in the Blue Ridge Mountains according to Bruce Ingram in an article posted on the River Smallies message board. The problem stems from endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). These EDCs seem to be causing male smallmouth bass to change sexes.
"When U.S. Geological Survey scientists analyzed the dead smallmouth bass, they
observed that nearly one-half of the male fish possessed eggs in their
reproductive tissue."
All I can say is if I wade one of these streams I am going to be wearing some pretty thick waders.
