Something Would Have Gotten Broke All Right...
It used to be that the movies had a certain romanticism about the notion of cowboys and anglers. They were held in a sort of "macho" high regard and were played by the likes of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Brad Pitt. Hollywood's recent attempt at breaking stereotypes, "Brokeback Mountain", has two cowpokes going on a fishing trip and never quite making it out of the tent. Charlie Meyers of the Denver Post says now when he tells his wife he is going on an overnight fishing trip, she looks at him in a funny sort of way. He observes:
In any case, the public persona for us cowboys and fishermen has changed dramatically. Don't ask, don't tell goes a long way around the campfire these days.
I can't help but picture the scene where a fellow drover looks at Rooster Cogburn and says "I wish I could quit you." I bet old Rooster would have found a way to assist him with his quitting.
Easy now....
