The Unforseen Risks of Fly Fishing
The Bovine Makes Lunch Of Expensive Pontoon Boat!
This actually happened on a trip to fish Tennessee's Watauga River this weekend. Aside from almost loosing a boat, Zug, Paisley, and Garwood had a good day on the water. Be sure to check out how they did by visiting the fishing reports page at www.flyfishmagazine.com.

Birds Close Popular N.C. Fishing Beach

I am a little behind posting this story but here it is. The Pilotonline.com and several other papers report on the North Carolina Department of Wildlife's closure of the popular fishing beach Cape Point on the Outerbanks. The closure is a measure to protect a small group of nesting shore birds. A group called the Defenders of Wildlife based out of Washington, DC threatened to sue the state of North Carolina if they did not close the area. The beach should reopen once the Piping Plovers fly away. I hope they don't nest on your house.

Support our Troops - A Knife for a Soldier

So if you are thinking about something to do to support our troops in Iraq and sending care packages full of food and stuff is just not your style. Send a soldier something he can really use, a knife. Smoky Mountain Knife Works (one of Zug's favorite stores) of Severville, TN is making this program possible.

Supreme Fly Fishing

AZcentral.com reports about another famous and powerful fly fisher. The honorable Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conner is visiting Montana for a few days of fly fishing before starting her retirement in earnest. I think she has an unfair advantage when it comes to fly fishing though. If there is no hatch on she can simply tell the bailiff to tell the trout to "All Rise".
Make Waders While You Work...

If your dream has always been to move to Billings, Montana, get a job, and fish every day you might want to read this article in the Billings Gazette. Simm's Fishing Products Corp. (who make some darn fine waders) is having trouble filling jobs at their factory. Maybe the staff of Flyfishmagazine.com should consider making a change to our day jobs. Zug and Paisley, let me know if you are up to it and I will start packing.

Fishing for Laughs - Local Boys Make Good - Get Paid To Tell Jokes and Fish

What do you get when you cross Blue Collar Comedy with Fishermen? It is called Fishing for Laughs and is a TV show that airs on selected stations in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Show hosts Art Church and Jerry Carroll put a comic spin on the sport we love. Be sure to check out the video samples on the site. If anybody gets this show in their market drop me a line and let me know what you think about it. These guys should meet up with Zug, Paisley and I sometime for some fishing!

What Happens in Vegas Stays In Vegas ...Specifically your Money!
Well I have returned from my recent visit to sin city. Thanks to Zug for some excellent blogging in my absence. I took my PDA in hopes of doing some Moblogging (mobile blogging) but it was very hard to find wireless internet access in Vegas (free wireless that is..). I guess the Casinos don't want you hanging out in your room. I was able to experience history in the making as the High last Tuesday was 117 degrees. That is the highest temp ever recorded in Las Vegas. It may be a "dry heat" but 117 is hot no matter if it is wet or dry. Also for those of you who are interested I did hit for 10k on the new Star Wars slot machine. Yep 10,000 pennies. Also for the record, Zug's theory of betting on snake eyes to come up at 30-1 at craps is indeed crap.

Out Of This World Fly Fishing

The ultimate fly fishing trip! Scientist believe that the moon Europa near Jupiter is a large body of water. They believe that this moon may have life in the frozen waters. I wonder what kind of fly I should use? I'm certainly going to need a sinking line! Leave it to ol' Zug to imagine all the possibilities for you.

Bean Counter Counts Winnings at Rolex / IFGA Tourney

Naples Florida accountant Robert Collins won the Rolex / IGFA Inshore Championship Tournament in the Florida Keys. He managed a trifecta on the final day bringing in a pair of tarpon, a pair of permit and a bonefish to seal the victory. This tournament awards points for not only the fish you catch but the way you catch them. Fly Rods Rule and Steve Ward of Coppell, Texas won the fly fishing division!

Hero Casting Contest - Sept. 8th - 10th

I have never been accused of being a great caster but I know some folks who could compete for this $7,500 prize and have a shot at it. Start practicing your double and triple haul and sign up for this contest to be held at the Fly Fishing Retailer World Trade Expo. The expo is being held in Denver, Sept. 8-10th. I should be in Arkansas fishing the White River that week. If so I will be casting to a big brown trout instead of a hoop at the end of a 2 inch deep casting pool.
Destination - Blackberry Farm Ranked #2 in USA.

Here is an article about Blackberry Farm in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Blackberry Farm has garnered national acclaim as a destination by being ranked #2 of the 100 best hotels in an upcoming issue of Travel and Leisure Magazine. One thing they promote is their easy access to fly fishing in the area.
Fly Fishing Raft "Monster Garage" Style

The Brothers Paisley with a limited amount of help from Zugbug and I, have semi-completed the fly fishing raft project. We still have to purchase the oars, seats, and install the oarlocks and anchor before it will be ready for river trials. We hope to have it out of dry dock (Paisley's back yard) and in the river very soon.

Yellowstone Angler - Deep Deals Page

Yellowstone Angler.com has a "deep deals" page where you can browse new discontinued and demo rods, reels and equipment. The prices are not the greatest but I am a cheap-skate and they carry some high end product. You can save a few dollars this way. An example is the Abel "Camo Coral" Super 8wt reel for $695.00 in like new condition. I froogled it and found it new for $720. A similar reel (Abel #3n Anti Reverse Caribbean Camo Coral) on ebay was going for a $575.00 starting price with no bids.

These are made right here in North Carolina and the President of the company, Warren Norman, is a great guy. They also make sack ups for fire arms and knife collections.
Shenandoah River Fish Kill

More sad news for fly fishers as WAVY.com of Hampton Roads, VA reports the effect recent fish kills on the Shenandoah River are having on the people who make their living on the water. Over 746 miles of the watershed are effected and in some areas the entire population of small mount bass and sunfish have been wiped out. So far biologists have not found out the cause of the kill.
